GUS-TRANS

An Original Business Gift

Near the end of Oktober 2017, we received a phone call from logistic company GUS-TRANS GmbH. They had a question: “We want to create an original business gift for Christmas. We really want something out of the box. Can you help us?” Of course, we could. And the project had started.

Firstly, we invited marketing manager Julia Cornelissen for a brainstorm session on 1 November 2017. This session was also a great way to get to know the company better. We learned that GUS-TRANS GmbH values personal contact, expertise, and flexibility. During this session, the idea of a board game was born.

The structure of the game was clear almost immediately. It had to represent a route; the player had to go from A to B. This way, we could imitate transporting cargo, which is the core of the company. That’s why we were inspired by the infamous Game of the Goose.

The Game

Firstly, the player must roll GUS-TRANS (six eyes), before he or she can put their pawn on the board. After that, the player must draw a call card at each turn. This card decides whether the player can move forward or not. Some cards make you move forwards, whereas others tell you to stay put, or take one of several steps backwards. Some call cards tell you to take a card from the question card pile. These questions are about logistics. In case you answer correctly, you are allowed to take a step forward. Step by step, you will get closer to your target: the finish line. However, you must also cross several border checks. You can only cross them when you roll GUS-TRANS (six eyes). In case you roll 1-5, you get a question. Answer it correctly, and you can cross. Otherwise you must try again next turn. This means that you must have enough knowledge of logistics in order to reach the finish line first.

All Domains

During this project, all domains were involved in creating the board game:

1. Marketing

First of all, a business gift is a marketing tool in itself. By sending a gift, the receiver will have your company top-of-mind.

2. Branding

The game could not have been created without branding. When designing a business gift, it’s vital that the story and values of GUS-TRANS GmbH are told truthfully.

3. Copywriting

The domain copywriting was busy producing over 200 game cards, the rules of the game, and the English translations. The German translation has been done by an external party via GUS-TRANS GmbH.

4. Graphic Design

Of course, the graphic design domain has realized everything visually. From the board game to the little logo on the hour glass.

5. Project Management

And of course, the project manager has managed to direct this board game symphony into a great result.

Values

The game has been designed in such a way that the values of GUS-TRANS GmbH are present in the game. By sending each relation a game, we show the personal contact. The expertise is present in the many questions in the game; you can only win if you’re knowledgeable about logistics. The game also demands you to be flexible. You can draw a call card that makes you go back to start any second.

Together Towards the Finish Line

The board game has developed from idea to physical end product in only a month and a half. In order to send the game to the printer, because it had to be sent to the relations in time, we needed all hands on deck. That’s why we spend time sorting the game cards together with the printer. Did we think we’d have a complete board game designed, printed, and sent in October? No. But we would do it all again in a heartbeat.

The Result

The result is a gift that tells the values of GUS-TRANS GmbH by means of a board game. The first board game has been handed to GUS-TRANS GmbH on 18 December, after which the others were sent to the relations.
